John 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
After The Police hit it big with "Every Breath You Take," lead singer Sting was clear the song was not about love but control. A bride told him she and her husband played the song at her wedding because it was "our song." Sting reportedly replied, "I'm sorry."
We can get the idea God is not about love but control. We might fear God is always watching us to see what we do wrong. God may seem like a dark figure ready to punish us. But this isn't the message of the Bible.
Jesus said God is consistently present through the Holy Spirit in order to help us. To do life with us. To advocate for us and speak truth.
Indeed, God is there for every breath you take. Be assured the Holy Spirit is interested first in love and second in teaching us self-control. Both are fruits of the Spirit, benefits of God's constant presence.
Every breath we take, we are already near to God. We can draw nearer by searching for God's presence. Let us be searchers, knowing we don't have to search very far.
