Matthew 9: 20-22 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.
My grandmother used to love to tell the story of when I had a headache when I was four years old. I kept complaining that my head hurt, so she gave me a chewable baby aspirin and some water with which to wash it down. She said the pill hadn't even hit my stomach before I proclaimed, "I feel better already, Grandma!"
I recently thought of that story while reading the account of the woman suffering from a blood flow. She was healed before the pill hit the stomach, so to speak, but hers was a real healing, not a whimsy like mine. Jesus's power and her faith combined to bring a dozen years of pain, uncleanliness, and embarrassment to an end.
As Christians, we believe in Christ's healing. It may not always be in the way we desire. It may be physical healing, but it may also present as spiritual healing. Or healing will come in the next life, not in this life. But always, when we reach out in faith to touch Jesus's cloak, healing will occur.
Perhaps like with three-year-old me, just knowing someone is taking care of us may be enough to heal us to a degree. Knowing Jesus is watching over us and caring for us makes us feel better already.
