I was six years old and very mad at my mother. Why, I don't recall now, but I threatened to leave home. My mother said, "OK."
So I packed up my knapsack and headed out. I didn't know where I was going; I was just leaving. Ultimately, I roamed around behind a Conoco gas station around the corner for a while, regretted my decision, and returned home sheepish and weepish.
Hebrews 11:8 (NIV) tells us Abraham didn't know where he was going, either, when he struck out for the Promised Land. But there was a difference; Abraham trusted that God knew where to lead him.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
This passage reminds us that when we trust God, we don't have to know exactly where we are going. We can believe that all will be revealed to us eventually, but more importantly, we know whom we are with on the journey.
One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Chronicles 20:12, in which King Jehoshaphat ended a prayer for deliverance by saying, "We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you." If God is leading us, then our main job is to follow, and we can do that by keeping our eyes on the Lord.
Through scripture, through prayer and meditation, and through discernment of the Holy Spirit's communication, we can keep our eyes in the right place, even if we don't know exactly where we are going.
