Wednesday Devotional: Is the Future Murky or Clear?

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

As I was bedding down the night before my cat Raven's annual trip to the vet, I thought, "She doesn't know what's going to happen to her tomorrow." Raven was nestled in her cat bed, unaware that her least favorite day of the year awaited her.

Then I thought, "She also doesn't know that tomorrow is Special Treat day," the day of the week when she gets her favorite snacks. I considered Raven's blissful ignorance, living in the present and not knowing what the future held.

I wondered if God sees me the same way. While I don't believe that God has everything in my life planned to the Nth degree (my free will gets in the way of that), I do believe God can see how things could or will unfold. God knows which cells in my body are rebelling already, preparing to cause me health issues later. God knows what is going on with other people, especially loved ones that I might need to deal with or care for. And so much more. God is quite aware of my blissful ignorance.

But my ignorance isn't as blissful as Raven's. I can ponder the future's possibilities, bad and good. I worry tons more than she does. Yet I can also know and have hope in life beyond this one, aware that what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

So, is the future murky or clear? According to our belief as Christians, the details may be murky, but the big picture is clear. The United Church of Canada created a creed in 1968 containing these wonderful, clarifying words: In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

We don't know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future. Let us become aware of God's presence in the present and be confident of God's presence in the future.
