Wednesday Devotional: Straightening My Crummy Posture

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (NIV) Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.

When I was in third grade, my school changed the report card to a holistic evaluation of each student. We were graded not only on our classwork, but on every aspect of our lives, including interpersonal relationships. It was a way of giving feedback to parents.

I flunked on posture. Maybe this should have been a clue to my parents to improve my posture, but they never said anything about it. We even have some hereditary posture issues in my family. So, I have struggled with my crummy posture all of my life.

During recent activities at my house, I've realized that there is no single posture. Lifting boxes from the floor, lifting boxes above your head, bending or squatting to reach things, and carrying heavy loads all require different postures.

Similarly, I must adopt different postures to pray, to stoop to help someone or wash their feet, and to stand tall and shine my light in the world.

When Paul wrote his first letter to the church at Corinth, he closed by urging them to straighten their postures and stand firm. Adopting a faithful posture requires alertness, courage, strength, and a loving nature that is clearly seen in all of our actions. In whatever endeavor we undertake, whether in service or in prayer, in speech or in example, let us take an appropriate and faithful posture.
